Frequently asked dental implant questions
Most healthy adults can get dental implants, and your dentist will evaluate if the treatment is right for you. You might not qualify if you:
- Have gum disease
- Smoke or vape heavily
- Have uncontrolled diabetes
- Have had radiotherapy to your jaw
- Drink heavily or use recreational drugs
No. We use local anaesthetic or sedation for your comfort. Many of our patients find it easier than having a tooth removed. Some tenderness afterwards is normal and easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
Possibly. If there isn’t enough bone in your jaw to support an implant, we may recommend a bone graft to reduce the risk of implant failure. Bone grafts work by building up the area and providing a secure base for the implant.
Most patients feel normal within 1-2 weeks after implant surgery. But full healing of the jawbone can take 3-6 months while the implant settles.
The surgical procedure itself usually takes a few hours. The complete process, including healing and final fitting, takes about 3-6 months. We can fit temporary teeth on the same day so that you won’t be left without your smile.
